Description

In Alchemy, Carlos Quinto Kemm weaves a rich, fantastical tableau—a mythic theater of transformation, where symbolism pulses through every thread of the composition. The piece stands as a visual opera of metamorphosis, evoking ancient mysteries, spiritual seeking, and the relentless pursuit of truth.

At its center rises a commanding female figure, adorned in elaborate, otherworldly costume. She appears to levitate or stand impossibly balanced atop a flourishing globe, her arms raised and head tilted in an expression of divine invocation or ecstatic revelation. Her hair, like threads of silver and seafoam, cascades past her shoulders, framing a face both serene and strange. She embodies the essence of the alchemical prima materia—the origin and destination of transformation—part priestess, part elemental queen.

Behind her, a dazzling fan of golden lines explodes outward like peacock feathers or celestial fireworks—an unmistakable evocation of the cauda pavonis, the peacock’s tail stage in alchemical transmutation, when iridescent colors signify the approach of enlightenment. The sky, however, is not yet at peace. Swirling storm clouds roil in purples, charcoals, and fire-lit oranges, a tumultuous firmament mirroring the internal upheaval required for change. The ocean beneath burns with an eerie rose hue, the color of sacred blood or the dissolving ego.

On the horizon, a boat drifts. In it, not a swan but a lone knight in shining armor—Percival—rows solemnly across the strange sea. He is the seeker, the grail knight, the human element within this cosmic ritual. His presence anchors the divine alchemy in mythic narrative: the personal quest for truth, purity, and transformation. He is on a pilgrimage of the soul, his journey echoing the trials of the alchemist or mystic who must traverse darkness to find light.

Beneath the central figure sprawls a majestic, winged dragon, its body coiled protectively around the base of the composition. Its scales shimmer with rich blues, greens, and golds, and it breathes multicolored flame—fire not of destruction, but of refinement. The dragon is both guardian and crucible, the primal force through which baser material is purified. One claw grips a crystalline globe balanced on a half-gilded skull, from which blooms a cluster of spiked, crystalline flora—a symbol of life erupting from death, of beauty grown from decay.

There are no serpents here—only the dragon, the knight, the queen, and the world between them. The winged creature, like the peacock and the lightning-laced sky, stands as a metaphor for the alchemical stages: nigredo (blackening), albedo (whitening), citrinitas (yellowing), and rubedo (reddening). Kemm doesn’t illustrate these stages explicitly, but layers them in visual metaphor, challenging the viewer to read the iconography as one might decode an esoteric text.

Alchemy is a synthesis of visual poetry and spiritual mythology. It speaks of an eternal quest—one where divine feminine power, primal forces, and human striving collide. In Kemm’s vision, transformation is not clean or linear; it is ecstatic, violent, and beautiful. The painting is a ritual in itself, a metaphysical map charting the voyage from darkness into illumination.
