Artist Overview & Representation Inquiry

Rooted in the Magic Realist and Visionary art traditions, my work explores emergence and self-realization through multi-dimensional painted collage. Using layered assemblage techniques, I delve into mythic storytelling and shamanic symbolism to examine themes of Eros, Death, and Spiritual Quest.

With a career spanning over four decades, my artistic journey began in the late 1970s through the medium of collage. My practice remains active and evolving in New Mexico, where I continue to create work that blurs dimensional boundaries and invites deep reflection. I’ve been honored with a residency at the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program and received recognition including an Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts grant and Best of Show at the 31st Annual International Juried Art Exhibition at the Roswell Museum.

My work has been exhibited widely and is held in several public collections, including the National Hispanic Cultural Center, the Albuquerque Museum, the New Mexico Museum of Art, the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Capitol Arts Collection in Santa Fe. In 2023, the National Hispanic Cultural Center acquired works from my solo exhibition Fantasía Fantástica: Imaginative Spaces and Other-Worldly Collage for their permanent collection.

I welcome inquiries from galleries, curators, and institutions interested in representation or collaboration.

Metaphormations

Having begun my artistic career painting and drawing, in the late 70’s I began experimenting with the medium of collage. My early work began with simple, small flat collages. Over time, the technical demands have challenged me to evolve and refine unique techniques to communicate that visual language. Some works have required several years of single-minded effort to bring to completion.

Allied to visionary and mystical pathways, my work feeds my questing need to make sense of life’s purpose. It is my heartfelt desire to give visual dialogue to those levels beyond personal symbols that will speak of the complexities of modern life in an age of incomprehensible madness.

I believe the collage medium is a largely misunderstood, yet incredible visual tool to stimulate imaginative awakenings. After 40 years, I still find the collage medium fresh and innovative. I find its ability to communicate metaphorical language of man’s inner spiritual search ~ limitless.

I welcome this opportunity to share the fruits of many years. May your own imagination be sumptuously fed!”

🐍 Behind the Frame: Head Reliquary

In this piece, Carlos chose to frame the work in actual snake shed—a decision both symbolic and tactile.

Why snake skin?
Because Head Reliquary is about transformation, the layers we shed, and what we choose to preserve. The shed border isn’t just aesthetic—it’s a conceptual vessel, reinforcing the themes of rebirth, memory, and the body’s silent rituals.
Watch as Carlos shares how this idea came to life.

Happy 4th of July. Let’s talk about America…
Carlos Quinto Kemm’s “This Gift…of Voting” is no parade float. It’s a collage of contradictions—truths, myths, and madness stitched together with stars and stripes.

In this vision, America isn’t clean. It’s cracked. Chaotic. Explosive. But it breathes.

You’ll see:
📜 A puppet of power.
🎭 A ritual of democracy.
🕯️ A shrine built on struggle.

Voting—this “gift”—isn’t simple. It’s sacred. It’s contested. It’s bloody. And in this piece, it’s placed on an altar. Because freedom doesn’t come free. And America? It’s still being made.

🌿✨ Detail Spotlight: Nagi Mother and Child
In this lush, jewel-toned dreamscape by Carlos Quinto Kemm, every inch of the piece whispers a story.

At the center: a serene Nagi mother—half woman, half serpent—embodied in quiet majesty. Her arms cradle stillness, but her coiled tail tells you she’s ready to strike if needed.

Surrounding her:
🌺 A child born of blossoms, nestled in a blooming lotus
🐍 Scales patterned like ancient runes and sacred cloth
💧 A stream flowing with reflected color and layered illusion
🦋 Moth wings, blooming lilies, and mythical trees—each cut and placed with reverence

Is this a jungle? A memory? A myth waiting to be told?

This isn’t just a mother and child—it’s a shrine to protection, transformation, and the sacred power of creation.

Why snakeskin?
Because some materials remember.
They carry a texture of transformation, shedding, survival.

This piece is part altar, part relic, part riddle—still in the making.

☀️ Detail Spotlight: Luna Y Sol
Let’s enter the blazing half of Carlos Quinto Kemm’s mythic masterpiece…

This is Sol—the Sun.
The masculine form, radiant and regal, wrapped in ribbons of gold and blue, crowned in ceremonial fire.

His face is part god, part beast—a surreal hybrid with an elephant trunk, as if wisdom and power share the same breath.

Behind him? A roaring sun. Not gentle light—but sacred combustion.
The kind that blinds. The kind that reveals everything.

Around him, life bursts from the earth. Flowers bloom, birds sing, vines twist—driven by heat and hunger.

This side of the piece doesn’t whisper. It declares.

It’s a cosmic ritual. A solar hymn.
And he—Sol—is the high priest of illumination.

✨ Every detail crackles with intention.

🌙 Detail Spotlight: Luna Y Sol
Let’s step into the moonlit half of Carlos Quinto Kemm’s dimensional dreamworld…

Here, Luna reigns.

The goddess—dark-skinned, snake-crowned, powerful—stands under a swirling night sky.
The moon hangs behind her like a silver eye, half-closed, ever-watching.
Her body glimmers with myth—part shadow, part star, part storm.

Around her, vines twist.
Owls, serpents, and sea creatures whisper in quiet patterns.
This is not the stillness of night—it’s the secret language of it.

She is lunar gravity made flesh.
Not just a woman in the dark—she is the dark.
Mysterious. Heavy. Alive.

✨ There’s a thousand stories in her pose alone.
